The Detroit Bar Association’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee brings you the second in a three-part series on implicit bias and microaggressions—A Journey to Now: Beginning the Conversation on Implicit Bias and Microaggression.

Coming from the perspective that everyone has biases, the conversation will center around how these biases are developed and how they affect members of the legal community at all stages of their career. Panelists Carla Young, Stephanie Hawkes, Greg Conyers, and Darlene King are each uniquely situated to discuss implicit biases and microaggressions at various stages of our careers:

Carla Young (K-12)

Ms. Young is the Director of Community and Multicultural Programs at Cranbrook Schools in Bloomfield Hills, MI. She is a board member of the Birmingham Race Relations & Diversity Task Force. She has been a presenter at the NAIS People of Color and NAIS annual, and ISACS conferences since 1987.

Stephanie Hawkes (Higher Education)

Dr. Hawkes serves as the Assistant Director for the Office of Multicultural Student Engagement (OMSE) at Wayne State University. She earned her bachelor's degree in Language, Literature, and Writing for Secondary Education, a master's degree in Higher Education Student Affairs from Eastern Michigan University, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Wayne State.

Greg Conyers (The Legal Career)

Mr. Conyers is the Director of Diversity for the State Bar of Michigan, the first to fill the role established at the bar to focus on efforts to improve the diversity and inclusion of the legal profession in Michigan. Mr. Conyers received his Juris Doctorate from Thomas M. Cooley Law School, and his service on numerous boards includes The Michigan Diversity Counsel, The National Consortium for Racial and Ethnic Fairness in the Courts, and The National Association of Bar Executives.

Darlene King (The Global Perspective)

Ms. King is the Executive Director of the Michigan Diversity Council-MIDC, a division of the National Diversity Council. Her charge is working with corporations and organizations in developing diversity and inclusion initiatives, programs, processes, and procedures. Ms. King brings over 25 years of experience in organizational development, and she earned a National Certification as a Certified Diversity and Inclusion Professional.

Attendees will leave this presentation with a deeper understanding of microaggressions and implicit bias.
