The Detroit Bar Association Pro Bono Access to Justice Committee is pleased to present a new virtual Lunch & Learn Volunteer Training Series. The sessions in this series will provide information and a "toolkit" of resources to volunteers with the "basics" to better serve clients during Virtual Detroit Legal Services Clinic advice and consultation and other clinics in the Detroit community.  Grab your lunch and tune in to Session #1 May 18, 2021.

Session #1: How to Navigate the Wayne County Friend of the Court

Presenters:

  • Jillian Fitzgerald, Legal Director – Assistant Friend of the Court, Wayne County Friend of the Court
  • Alyce Haas, Senior Staff Attorney, Wayne County Friend of the Court
  • Hulen Simpson, Domestic Relations Referee, Wayne County Friend of the Court 

Topics include:

  • How to start a case
  • Paternity establishment
  • Modification of custody, parenting time, and child support
  • Enforcement of parenting time and child support
  • How to manage arrears (e.g., discharge of state-owed arrears, payment plans, discharge by consent of payee, etc.)
  • Overview of docket directive (outlines what goes before the referee and what goes before the judge)
  • Overview of motion/case filing
  • Overview of website for resources (e.g., forms, child support calculator, outreach, etc.)
  • Q&A session

The training will benefit attorneys who are new to family and domestic violence law practice or experienced attorneys looking for information and updates on Wayne County Friend of the Court processes and procedures
