Family Law Training for Pro Bono Attorneys

The Detroit Bar Association’s Access to Justice/Pro Bono Committee invites you to attend a webinar focused on family law issues for pro bono attorneys. The presentation will focus on:

  • Strategies to screen and clarify the type of domestic relations or related family law issue the client is presenting with. 
  • Hypotheticals for issue spotting and brief advice in paternity, divorce, custody, parenting time, and child support cases. 
  • Tools to screen for domestic violence and to refer to domestic violence services. 
  • Resources pro bono attorneys can access from the Michigan Legal Help website including articles, checklists, instructions appropriate for low literate self-represented litigants, and interactive interview tool litigants can use to generate court forms, pleadings, and motions that are approved for use by SCAO.

Presenter: Megan Reynolds, Michigan Poverty Law Program

Megan Reynolds is the family law specialist at the Michigan Poverty Law Program, a statewide program that provides technical assistance, training, and co-counseling support to legal services attorneys and other poverty law advocates. MPLP also engages in systemic and legislative advocacy to help alleviate barriers faced by low income individuals. Megan was elected to the State Bar of Michigan Family Law Council in May 2024. She currently serves as Co-Chair of the Domestic Violence Committee of the State Bar of Michigan’s Family Law Section and a member of the Section’s Legislative and Amicus committees. Megan is co-author, along with Rebecca Shiemke, of the Domestic Violence chapter of the Michigan Family Law, 8th Edition, published by the Institute of Continuing Legal Education. Her article on the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act was published in the June/July issue of the Michigan Family Law Journal.

Before joining MPLP in 2023, Megan served as the Managing Attorney of Legal Services of South Central Michigan’s office in Battle Creek where she represented low-income domestic violence survivors in family law, personal protection, and related matters in Calhoun, Branch, and Barry Counties. From 2017 to 2022, Megan served as Chief Deputy Circuit Court Administrator and Deputy Friend of the Court for Calhoun County Circuit Court. Megan is a 2006 graduate of the Michigan State University College of Law.

Attend and receive a Certificate of Completion. Approved for State Bar of Michigan Pro Bono Honor Roll hours. Training hours can be put toward the Detroit Bar Pro Bono award with recognition at the annual Archer Award Gala in November.
