Detroit Bar Fish and Game Section Presents
Introduction to Hunting

Thursdays, February 5-26, 2026

6-7:30 p.m.

A four-part series designed to provide information and answer your questions about becoming involved in the conservation and stewardship of Michigan’s outstanding hunting opportunities.

All sessions will be held at the Fresard House in Grosse Pointe Woods and hosted by Donn Fresard. Each session will last approximately 45 minutes, accompanied by casual dining and wild game samples, followed by an hour of socializing.

Thursday, February 5: Introduction to Equipment

No live ammunition will be anywhere near firearms, and all guns will be locked to ensure redundant gun safety. We will explore the various uses and types of shotguns and rifles, as well as crossbows and compound bows.

Thursday, February 12: Upland Bird Hunting

We will explore the seasons, techniques, clothing, footwear, and locations for hunting pheasants, chukkars, grouse, and spring and fall wild turkey. We will also discuss preparing and serving each to best enjoy their unique flavors.

Thursday, February 19: Waterfowling

This session will examine the appeal of pursuing ducks, geese, coots, and mergansers on Michigan’s waterways and fields.

A typical waterfowl hunt can involve early rising, launching a boat, loading it with dogs, decoys, and firearms in the dark — what could go wrong?

Plenty — but the reward of harvesting a couple of delightful mallards makes it all worthwhile. We will also discuss aging and preparing ducks for the table and may even present Caneton Tour d’Argent, or pressed duck, a classic French delicacy.

Thursday, February 26: Deer Hunting

Learn what is involved in obtaining access to property, setting and monitoring trail cameras, understanding the seasons, selecting equipment, employing techniques and tips to improve your odds, and what to do with a deer once you harvest one.
