Session #33: Fees, Fines, and Suspensions - How Reform Can be Achieved

This session will explore the realities of how fines and fees impact low-income communities. The research shows how court-based debt is a national problem for many families, in both urban and rural communities. The discussion will also explain Michigan's system of court funding and how courts operate with funding from various sources. The session will conclude by highlighting initiatives that have been successful in different communities as well as proposed statewide reforms that could minimize negative outcomes for impacted communities in the State.
